Decided not to do the thermostat tonight or the radiator hoses and just get the expansion tank replaced and bleed the system. Little did I know my automatic transmission thermostat is a crumbling mess and since I don’t keep E46 automatic transmission thermostats up my ass I’m stuck with a 3,600lb paperweight until Thursday.

Rookie mistake. My anus is a repository for German high-performance car parts.

Second shelf on the left?

I’m going to assume everything is actually on fire.
RIP E46

Automatic transmission thermostat? Jesus, I’m going to crawl under my pickup and give my transmission a pat.

No no, third shelf.

Ah my bad, force of habit. It’s Mercedes on the second.

Sounds more comfortable to not have those shoved up there

Told you to sell a while ago. Do the thermostat (and might as well do the water pump) and use metal parts for both. Yes, the “fancy” E46 water pump is $200, but it will stick around beyond the OEM 20K-30K mile usual lifetime. Use the expanded tank too. The thermostat is different betwen auto and stick (I have a stick) - Its winter time and you have no heat too? damn dude.

The AT on the e46 shares a cooling system with the engine?
Dafuq
And I thought my e36 was bad...

I am going to guess that you didn't start this job by putting paper under the weight of the car. So it's not even doing its job.

Can confirm, this is where all top-level oppos keep things like zip-ties and thread-lock.

I always assume a late-model BMW is about to catch on fire which is why I haven’t bought one for myself yet.

Just another reason to drive a manual I suppose.

The facelift ones do. Bottom 1/5th of the radiator is the trans cooler. The trans thermostat is curiously referred to as a “voltage regulator.”
Facelift e38 has a water cooled alternator as well.
Glad I own a prefacelift.
